As we enter the final week of Unrivaled’s regular season, host Gigi Speer welcomes the voice of Unrivaled, Brendan Glasheen, to Locked On Women’s Basketball to share his thoughts on the league’s inaugural campaign and give out superlatives.
Phantom BC center Brittney Griner recently had the first slam dunk in Unrivaled history off an assist from guard Natisha Hiedeman. Glasheen looks back on his call of that play and what was going through his mind:
“Natisha Hiedeman, what a heck of a play to set that up. I mean, that’s what really allowed for it: deception in dribbling the ball, draw in the two defenders. … I thought Hiedeman was going to go to the rack and make a move, so, but then she drew two. …
“When [Griner] went up and threw it down, it was cool. I was shocked because we hadn’t seen anything really close to it. It wasn’t like she’d tried it before; there wasn’t a bookmark moment from earlier in the year where they were intentional [in looking for a dunk]. But then you find out from Hiedeman that they were like, ‘We’re gonna get that dunk tonight.’ So maybe it’s my fault for not anticipating it more.”
Later in the episode, Glasheen makes his case for Rose BC guard Chelsea Gray as the league’s MVP:
“Chelsea [is] shooting the three as well as she ever has [and is] leading the league in assists still. But really … whatever that particular game needs and demands, Chelsea Gray has met that challenge. And in most cases lately, it’s been, ‘I’ll table-set early, and then I’m gonna go be an assassin at the end of the game and go win the game.’ …
“[Rose BC is] peaking while players are hurt. And she’s got more than half of their game-winners, and she sets the tone for them.”
