Pride Tape — New Jobs — Must-click women’s hockey links

The IX: Hockey Friday with The Ice Garden, Oct. 13, 2023

Happy Friday! It’s Leighann Strollo from The Ice Garden with another weekly round up of women’s hockey news. It’s finally October and the wait for some hockey is over as the NCAA got underway and the NHL kicked off as the PWHL has ramped up their news. Unfortunately, that exciting time didn’t come without controversy this week.

The NHL announced they have banned the use of Pride Tape during warm-ups or games in the midst of an ongoing debate surrounding players wearing anything that supported social causes. Because of this, a lot of this week’s must reads from me actually come in the form of tweets or statements put out by those in the women’s hockey community that have spoken out about the ban or showed their support of the Pride Tape brand. The PWHLPA has already tweeted a statement. With the addition of some news of new roles and jobs in WoHo, the Rivalry Series roster release and NCAA heat, there is a lot to delve into.

One of the most important things I read this week was a statement from Harrison Browne, that I feel needs to be viewed by all when considering the topic of the Pride Tape ban:

After the PWHL draft, the league has pushed forward in trying to cement their teams, front offices and even lock down their names and home rinks all before a looming January start. In that, we’ve seen lots of good and exciting hires as well as sad news, like what former Metropolitan Riveters coach, Ivo Mocek shared on Twitter, which highlights the obvious growing pains of the ‘one league’ ever desired by the women’s hockey community:

The U.S. Women’s National Team Roster Announced for November Rivalry Series. There are some notable names left off of this list, but one exciting entry is Laila Edwards, out of Wisconsin, who will become the first Black woman to represent USA’s national women’s hockey team.

Two weeks ago, Angelica brought you five NCAA storylines to watch and one of them was how Ohio State would be out for revenge against last year’s national champions Wisconsin. While they don’t play each other just yet, both teams will be in action this weekend.

Finally, in case anyone needed a reminder that Alina Müller is good at hockey, I will always be one to give it. Müller Scores Five Goals In Swiss League Debut, giving us just a taste of what to expect when she heads back to North America for the inaugural PWHL season.
