There’s been a flurry of WNBA collective bargaining agreement (CBA) news that is the focus of Friday’s The IX Sports Podcast. Howard emphasised the nuances of negotiations, noting, “When it gets a little quiet, that’s usually a sign that an agreement is close at hand. When you hear one side of it, you’re not hearing everything that’s involved.”
The discussion focused on the league’s proposed changes to player housing and the winter break. While initially portrayed as potentially harsh, the hosts explained that these changes are tied to increasing salaries and the evolving revenue-sharing structure. Players are expected to see major financial gains, including a supermax salary increase of over 300% and minimum salaries rising more than 230%, giving players more autonomy over housing choices. As Jackie Powell noted, “The thing I have been looking at … is what the salary cap is going to look like. If you are a player in this league, your agent needs to be tracking this in real time because it matters just as much as the vet minimum or the [supermax].”
The episode also explored season scheduling, overlapping NCAA tournament concerns, and the importance of extended recovery periods to reduce soft tissue injuries. Toward the end of the show, Jackie asks Howard about why watching Seton Hall play Princeton earlier this week mattered so much.
