This episode features host Missy Heidrick and The Next reporter and Managing Editor Jenn Hatfield talking about the Ivy League, with topics ranging from the league’s 2023 NCAA Tournament prospects to an infusion of new coaches.
Jenn on the excellent season from Princeton guard Abby Meyers, after averaging only six points per game when she had last played in 2019-20:
I don’t want to suggest that there wasn’t a good supporting cast around [Meyers], because it was fantastic. But they went as she went. She set the tone, she was their captain, she plaed with a swagger you could see through your TV screen. … That’s going to be a big hole for them next year.
Missy on the longevity of Kathy Delaney-Smith and her recent retirement:
As we think about the longevity and the history of women’s college basketball, so much of it has really been rooted in the Ivy League. If you look at the trajectory of the coaches and the longevity, the [longest-tenured coach] in the league will be Dayna Smith at Cornell, She’s heading into her 20th year there … but it had been 40 years for the head coach of Harvard women’s basketball, Kathy Delaney-Smith.
