It’s time for another episode of the Locked on Women’s Basketball podcast. The latest episode features host Missy Heidrick, who is joined by The Next’s Seattle Storm beat writer Rowan Schaberg for a look at the upcoming semifinals that kick off with a doubleheader on Sunday, Aug. 28.
Missy and Rowan discuss the series between the Las Vegas Aces and the Seattle Storm, including Seattle needing to continue limiting stars and playing on the road. They also discuss the Chicago Sky against the Connecticut Sun, including whether the Sky’s 4-0 regular-season advantage over the Sun means that much when it comes time for the postseason.
Rowan on the Storm having to go on the road to open the semifinals, given the two teams’ last two meetings:
Every team always talks about how important home-court advantage is. But the storm sold out I think it was the last two home games of the regular season, a new arena, it’s just been packed every single game. And I think that’s just played a huge role in how the Storm have done at home.
I think that one interesting thing is that in the game on Aug. 7 where the Aces came [to Seattle], the margin was a little bit [wider] than in the game where the Storm went and played at the Aces on Aug. 14. So it’s kind of interesting because I think the Storm looked a little bit better on the road in that game
Rowan on whether it makes sense to wipe the slate clean when looking back at regular season matchups:
I think that it’s hard to say sometimes, I think sometimes it’s nice to look at it. Especially with the Storm and the Aces because those games that they played were so recent. I think I look a little more at those recent games because they’ve had time to develop, the Storm have Tina Charles in and trying to figure everything out. But, I think … everyone comes with a new intensity when it comes to playoff time.
