The IX Sports Podcast is back with another episode.
On today’s soccer edition, host Kathleen Gier explains the significance of the record crowd for Denver Summit FC’s home opener and breaks down the USWNT April training camp roster.
The Summit played their first game of the season at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium on March 28 and drew an NWSL-record crowd of 63,004 fans. The match against the Washington Spirit ended in a 0-0 draw, earning the Summit another point in the NWSL standings.
“I could have never imagined playing at Empower Field in front of that many people,” Summit FC player and Denver native Janine Sonis said. “So I’m just so grateful, thankful that Denver showed up. I’m not surprised. This is such a Sports City.”
Gier next discussed the 26-player USWNT roster for a trio of matches against Japan in April. Gier highlighted the group of midfielders and forwards as the team’s strongest. She also noted that it’s a more experienced roster, with every player named to the team having at least one national team cap under their belt.
“I was really impressed by this group last window. I’m excited to see how they continue to grow together,” Gier said. “This doesn’t feel like a particularly flashy group. Obviously, we have some goal celebrations. We do have Emma dancing. But on the field, it’s not going to be necessarily that super high-scoring that we’ve seen from the US the last couple of years. But I think this is a really technically apt team, and I think that they are in a position to really compete at that highest level.”
