With three spots already clinched in the standings, the PWHL now has a five-horse race in the fight for the final playoff spot. The Toronto Sceptres currently occupy the fourth-overall spot with 34 points and five games remaining in the season, but it’s going to be a tight couple weeks.
A quick look at the standings, as of April 5:
- x – Montrรฉal Victoire
- x – Boston Fleet
- x – Minnesota Frost
- Toronto Sceptres (34 points)
- Ottawa Charge (33 points)
- New York Sirens (31 points)
- Vancouver Goldeneyes (27 points)
- Seattle Torrent (23 points)
What do the Sceptres need in order to secure their spot in the Walter Cup Playoffs?
Step One: Patience
The Sceptres return to action on Saturday, but several other teams in the playoff hunt play before then. The Torrent hit the ice Tuesday and Wednesday; the Goldeneyes play Tuesday as well (against Boston). The Charge play the Torrent on Wednesday. The Sirens picked up an important win on Saturday at Madison Square Garden to keep their own playoff push alive.
These upcoming games could cause some shifts in the standings, at least temporarily. For instance, if the Torrent lose both of their games in regulation, they will be eliminated from playoff contention, by virtue of the Charge hitting 36 points. Simultaneously, the Charge would bump the Sceptres down to fifth place.
The important thing to remember here is that at the end of the season, every team plays the same number of games. With five games left in the season for the Sceptres, they could control their own destiny.
Step Two: Win
If the Sceptres win all of their remaining games in regulation, they will make the playoffs. They’ll max out at 49 points, which is more than any of the other teams in contention can hit.
Of particular importance, the Sceptres play twice against the fifth-place Charge and twice against the sixth-place Sirens. Those could be crucial points as the end of the season draws nearer. Winning – and in regulation – is the Sceptres’ best path.
Of course, it’s not always that simple. But the math changes once you start factoring in overtime and shootouts. Things get more complicated. Keep it simple, focus on one game at a time, and just win. Period.
Also… Score
Toronto’s offense will need to step up in these last few games. The Sceptres have scored just 47 goals this season, second-fewest in the league. (Only the Torrent, with 46 goals, have fewer.)
The Sirens have scored six goals in their last two games; their offense, particularly lit by Sarah Fillier, has found some legs. The Charge haven’t been as hot, having scored one goal in their last two games and three goals in their last three games.
Get to the net, take the shot, and find ways to get the puck in. (If only it were as simple as it sounds, right?)
