National team training camps and IIHF World Championships precede the PWHL season and are the first opportunity to see players in action before the season begins. Reports following Team Canada’s scrimmage suggests San Jose will have to begin the inaugural season without veteran netminder Corinne Schroeder. Schroeder was unable to play in Team Canada’s scrimmage on Wednesday, Oct. 14, and was seen leaving the arena in a boot.
Schroeder was San Jose’s first signing in the expansion process in June and is expected to be the team’s starting goaltender. While there isn’t much information about Schroeder’s injury, it is worth looking at San Jose’s other goaltending options if Schroeder is out long-term.
Abbey Levy
San Jose’s three signed goaltenders include Schroeder, Abbey Levy — previously of the Boston Fleet, and 2026 third-round draft pick Tia Chan. Levy has played in each of the first three PWHL seasons. She played the first two with the New York Sirens, and the most recent with the Boston Fleet. She has a lifetime record of 2-7-3 with a .906 save percentage and 2.97 goals-against average.
Tia Chan
Chan was just the second goaltender off the board in the 2026 Draft. Before signing, Chan was the go-to starter for the University of Connecticut Huskies over the last four seasons. During her final year at UConn, Chan boasted a .948 sv% and 1.56 GAA. She was named the Women’s College Hockey Goalie of the Year, the Hockey East Goaltender of the Year, and was a First Team All-American. As a highly anticipated rookie, she will be leaned on heavily in Schroeder’s absence.
PWHL San Jose was one of three teams to invite only three goaltenders to training camp. With teams required to carry three goalies the roster, there may be another signing to come. Should Shroeder’s injury keep her out long-term, here are seven players invited to other camps to be considered for San Jose.
Sandra Abstreiter
Sandra Abstreiter is one of three unsigned invites to the PWHL Hamilton camp. She has the most PWHL experience of the invitees. Abstreiter appeared in five games for the Walter Cup-winning Montréal Victoire with a 3-2-0 record, including one shutout, a .905 sv%, and 2.62 GAA. As impressive as her numbers are, it seems that she will assume the backup role in Hamilton. However, until a contract is signed, that could still change.
Lauren Bench
PWHL Las Vegas training camp invitee Lauren Bench spent the 2025-26 season playing for Djurgårdens IF in Sweden’s SDHL. As the team’s starter, she went 11-15 with a .917 sv% and 2.28 GAA. During Djurgården’s short playoff run, Bench’s numbers dipped to a .803sv% and 4.77 GAA, but her professional experience makes her a standout among this list.
Kaitlyn Ross
Kaitlyn Ross is the only unsigned USports alumni invited to camp. The Ottawa Charge camp invitee played five seasons with the Mount Royal University Cougars from the 2019-20 season to 2024-25. In her final year, Ross went 15-6-0 with a .943 sv% and 1.25 GAA.
Julia Minotti
Julia Minotti spent her first three seasons of college at Clarkson University before transferring to the University of St. Thomas. In Minotti’s final NCAA season she went 9-21-1 with a .899 sv% and 2.97 GAA. Despite the Tommies’ struggles, Minotti is one of two goalies competing to be signed by the Seattle Torrent and round out the lineup.
Calli Hogarth
Calli Hogarth is attending Toronto Sceptres camp as the only unsigned goaltender. The 22 year old spent four years in NCAA, her first three with Merrimack before transferring to Quinnipiac for her senior year. Hogarth only played in one game for the Quinnipiac Bobcats, but had a .904 sv% and 2.86 GAA over three years with Merrimack. With Toronto’s three goaltenders already signed, its very likely Hogarth is an available option for San Jose come the start of the season.
Hope Walinski
Hope Walinski is attending Minnesota Frost training camp after four years with the Providence College Friars. Walinski played in all 35 games during her senior year posting a .912 sv% and 2.74 GAA. She recorded 959 saves, the most in Friars history, and was named the Stop It Goaltending Goaltender of the Week for the week of Feb. 16.
Quinn Kuntz
Quinn Kuntz did not play during the 2025-26 season, but was teammates with PWHL San Jose’s first round draft pick Laila Edwards during the 2024-25 season. She appeared in nine games for the Badgers and had a .970 sv% and .55 GAA. Despite the small sample size, she is the fourth goaltender at New York Sirens camp, and would fit the bill as a third for PWHL San Jose.
PWHL San Jose training camp opens on Wednesday, Nov. 18, following the conclusion of the IIHF Women’s World Championship taking place in Denmark from Nov. 6–16. As part of training camp, PWHL San Jose will play two preseason scrimmages on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 5 p.m. PT and Monday, Nov. 30 at 1 p.m. PT, both against the Seattle Torrent at Tech CU Arena.
