After the Connecticut Sun beat the Las Vegas Aces 72-65 Sunday, Liz Cambage posted an Instagram Story on her personal account detailing a negative interaction with Sun head coach Curt Miller during the game.
Cambage said Miller referenced her body weight while arguing with an official about not getting a call.
“If there’s one thing about me, I will never let a man disrespect me. Ever,” she said. “The next time you try to call out a referee, you know trying to get a call being like, ‘Come on, she’s 300 pounds.’ I’m gonna need you get that right, baby, because I’m 6’8 … I’m weighing 235 pounds and I’m very proud.”
“Don’t ever try to disrespect me or any other woman in the league. I don’t know if that’s how coaches run? You just try to disrespect women like that on the sidelines?”
Cambage followed up her initial comments later that night to add that she thinks there’s a difference between players trash talking on the court, compared to a coach yelling “protected abuse.”
“I think there’s a big difference between players and players like talking shit on the court, but for a coach for another team to be yelling like protected abuse, because we can’t do nothing back, it’s just crazy to me. And I’ll be talking a lot and I didn’t even say nothing tonight.”
Cambage’s comments were echoed by Las Vegas Aces executive Keri Laimbeer, listed as head of Player/Coach Communications, on Twitter following Cambage’s video.
The Sun released a statement on behalf of Miller on Monday morning about his comments.
“During last night’s game, while arguing a call with an official, I made an inappropriate and offensive comment in reference to Liz Cambage’s height and weight. I regret what I said in the heat of the moment and want to sincerely apologize to Liz and the entire Aces organization. I understand the gravity of my words and have learned from this.”
The Aces and Sun will meet again next Tuesday, June 1 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville.
