Indiana Fever forward Aliyah Boston joined Howard Megdal for the latest episode of Locked On Women’s Basketball to discuss her wildly successful first year in the WNBA. Aliyah, a South Carolina graduate, was tabbed as an All-Star and earned Rookie of the Year honors in her rookie campaign. She and Howard recapped the season and talked about how her time with Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks prepared her for the professional ranks.
They started their conversation with win shares, where she only trails Cynthia Cooper, Tamika Catchings, Yolanda Griffith, Candace Parker and Elena Delle Donne in rookie performance throughout the history of the league.
“I felt like I was able to grow as a person, as a player, and find my voice in this league as a rookie so I’m really excited about that,” Aliyah said. “But also my team, we grew on and off the court. And we continued to get better as the games went on. So I was really excited about that. And top it off, you know, winning Rookie of the Year was like one of my goals, and it was something that I wanted. To be able to do that as well was just a blessing from God. And I was super excited about how the season turned out.”
The two also took a look ahead to how Aliyah is building her brand off the court by joining Peacock as a studio analyst for Big Ten women’s basketball.
“Whenever the ball stops bouncing, I want to make sure that I have a career where I can continue to talk about it and I’m glad that I’m able to start that right away,” Aliyah said. “Literally right after the season’s over I’m gonna be on air talking about basketball and I’m super excited because I’m very passionate about basketball. I love it. I watch it continuously and so to be able to talk about it that’s pretty fun.”
