It’s time for another episode of the Locked on Women’s Basketball podcast. This episode features host Howard Megdal. A 104-80 loss at Mohegan Sun forced a winner-take-all Game 5 on Thursday. The Next‘s Chicago Sky beat reporter James Kay joins Howard, who was courtside for Game 4, as the two discuss what needs to change for Candace Parker.
James talks about what shocked him the most about Connecticut beating Chicago:
“Well, considering that for The Next I wrote that the Sun margin for error was small. I thought that this series was over, quite honestly. I really thought the Sky had solved what the Sun were throwing at them. And I gotta give Connecticut all the credit in the world for just being able to have a short turnaround and come back from an emotional loss like they had in game three. So I was pretty shocked by what happened on Tuesday.”
James talks about what was the significant factor in Game 4 for the Connecticut Sun win:
“I think it’s a blend of both, honestly. I mean, if you look at Courtney Williams in game three, I know the shooting numbers weren’t perfect. But when you look at her decision making is someone that was just passing up some of those contested mid-range shots that aren’t necessarily the most efficient in a series like this when you’re facing a Sky backcourt or frontcourt that is so active and her passing up those shots and just getting to the rim or trying to find someone down low just keeping the ball moving.
That’s been the problem with this offense is not keeping the ball moving. So when Courtney Williams was doing that, I mean, yes, she had like three assists on Tuesday’s game, but again, she opened up more opportunities for her teammates than what looks like simply in a traditional box score.”
