Drum roll, please!

Announcing the 2024 Best Dressed PWHL players for each team, as chosen by The Ice Garden‘s fashion experts(ish), Maya Smith and Giselle Velazquez. We scoured social media to find our favourite looks of 2024 and pick the best-dressed player from each team. Here’s who takes the cake:

Minnesota Frost:

There is something about how Michela pulls off style and simplicity. She doesn’t wear anything flashy but her outfits still leave an impression on me. Her outfits are the easiest for me to draw inspiration from because on the days I don’t want to frustrate myself with decision fatigue, I can easily find a Michela outfit that works for me. I also enjoy how easily she pulls off a beanie/toque. It definitely has made me revisit my beanie/toque collection. Michela also brings me inspiration when I feel like dressing more gender-neutral. Some days I don’t want to go out into the world feeling like the most feminine person, so to be able to draw inspo from Michela’s staples, like a black top and necklace with any set of dark pants, frees me from the need to feel like I have to present myself in a certain way. Style and comfort can be achieved without the need for labels.

Maya — Taylor Heise

Taylor’s outfits are a lot simpler than some of the others on this list, but I think they look really flattering on her. Unlike a lot of the outfits on this list, I think I could actually pull them off. I really love a sweater, skirt combo and when the weather is above -20, I want to wear that more this winter. (Also Minnesota, please post more photos of your walk-in outfits).

Boston Fleet:

Lexie is one of the best dressed in the league. She’s been taking more risks with what she wears this season, but she’s always been stylish. I especially love the white bucket hat in a couple of these outfits. No matter what she wears, she always rocks a walk-in video. Confidence > everything.

Giselle — Emma Greco

I got really into skirts and loafers as a go-to part of my outfits in the summer of 2023 and Emma reminded me of how much I enjoyed that in the first picture here from last season. They’re also classic outfits, something that wouldn’t take a lot of effort to replicate, but that’s not to say what Emma wears is impassive. She has her style down and knows what she likes. Her oversized blazers fit her seamlessly and the fact she uses neutral colors a lot makes everything pair well together. Emma is one of my favorites when I think of examples of the preppy style in fashion.

Toronto Sceptres:

For me, Emma has one of the cutest and most unique styles in the league. It’s charming and girly and it always feels like it’s Emma. I love how she styles a long coat with a long skirt and makes sure it doesn’t clash or look clunky. I can only describe her style for me as spring-like. It’s effortless and flowy and chic. Also, her purse collection is incredible. It seems she has a new one every game day and I aspire to have cute purses to go with all of my outfits too!

Maya — Sarah Nurse

Is there anything Sarah Nurse can’t do? I don’t think she’s ever worn an outfit that I haven’t liked. I also love the versatility of her outfits. The more street style options like the first photo are equally as perfect as the more elegant styles. If Sarah Nurse is doing it, she’s doing it well and fashion is no different. I would really like to feel that blue jacket, just saying.

Montréal Victoire:

Honestly, no one tops Mariah in my books. Not only is her style impeccable, but she also designs clothes for herself and others. The cream suit that she wore last season lives rent-free in my brain. It fit perfectly, it matched the Montréal branding and colours, and it was iconic. She’s so stylish even when she’s not wearing her own designs. Her looks are a lot girlier than some other players, especially the one she wore for the Montréal home opener this year (middle photo). Who else would wear a big tulle skirt to a hockey game? Yet it works so well for her.

Mariah is the coolest. There’s an edge to her style that speaks to me. I love how well her clothes fit her figure and how she tends to wear crop tops because they look great on her. Her pink suit outfit was my absolute favorite because the color was beautiful and the short top underneath was perfect. I also love that Mariah makes clothes because creating one-of-a-kind pieces is incredible and hard to do and shows how creative she is! Her latest outfit, which she wore in Seattle during the PWHL Takeover Tour, was the prettiest outfit I have ever seen. The flowers in her midsection being held together by a see-through corset? Are you kidding me? Plus the lace underneath her top? No one is crushing artsy and edgy outfits like Mariah.

Ottawa Charge:

Giselle — Emerance Maschmeyer

Masch has one of my favorite styles in this league. She is fashionable but she also dresses so sophisticatedly. Her outfits are always so well put together and she makes what looks like professional attire—what you and I would wear to the office—look uncomplicated and not boring at all. Masch has conquered the classic style.

Maya — Zoe Boyd

Could I wear any of these outfits? Unlikely. But Zoe rocks these more masculine looks so well (I’m jealous, honestly). My favourite is the newspaper sweater in the third photo, and I love the signature sunglasses inside. She’s always trying new things with her outfits and I really admire the way she rocks some different looks. The vest over no shirt is also such a trend lately and she pulls it off so well. Honestly, I’m not skilled in fashion enough to be able to describe how much I like these fits.

New York Sirens:

Maya — Olivia Knowles

I think Olivia Knowles is the most underrated player in the league when it comes to style. Part of this comes from not necessarily playing every game. But when she is in the lineup, she brings the fashion. Her holiday game look really cemented this for me. I love the white sweater, skirt, and boots combo. She had a similar boots and skirt combo for her first game with the Sirens, which was so preppy and cute. I also like how she can make streetwear look more elevated like she does with the shoes and bag in the middle image. Keep your eye on Knowlsey’s fashion for 2025.

Giselle — Allyson Simpson

Allyson’s style seems more of the casual type to me but I know she likes that pop of color or pattern. The way she mixes a chunky jacket with leopard patterned pants without it looking overwhelming is chef’s kiss! (Do the kids still say that?) In the second photo, she manages to not only pull off a white pleated/accordion pants, but the pop of red in her jacket along with her trendy sunglasses ties the whole look together and her outfits feel so easily put together.
