The Connecticut Sun have parted ways with head coach Stephanie White, the organization announced on Monday. Many questions remain about what the franchise will do and how much they want to use this moment as an opportunity to start fresh.

November 22, 2022 was the day White was officially announced as the Sunโ€™s head coach. She assumed the position after a 2-year detachment from coaching. But White knew she was destined to coach, and always had so much passion for the sport she loves.

โ€œThere are many nights when youโ€™re in a restaurant, and youโ€™re putting salt shakers in certain places and thinking about what you would do in end-of-game situations,โ€ White told reporters at her inauguration press conference.

During her tenure, White led the Sun to two semifinals appearances and had an overall regular season record of 55-25 and a 7-7 postseason record as head coach. White also was selected as a head coach for the 2023 WNBA All-Star game and was honored as 2023 AP Coach of the Year.

Her mission when she started with the Sun was a simple one โ€” to help make things easier for players during games.

โ€œMaking life easier for both of them [Sun forward Alyssa Thomas and former center Jonquel Jones] is my job,โ€ White toldย The Nextย after her introductory press conference. โ€œIt doesnโ€™t have to be so hard for them to get the things that they need to get in-game โ€” whether itโ€™s shots, whether itโ€™s rebounds, whether itโ€™s positions to open up isolations โ€” itโ€™s my job and our job as a staff to make their lives easier.โ€

But the Sun have practically been knocking on the door of a championship for a good amount of time now.

โ€œWe want to thank Stephanie for her time in Connecticut and her commitment to our organization over the pat two seasons,โ€ Sun President Jen Rizzotti said in a press release. โ€œWe wish her the best in her future endeavors.โ€

White voiced in her exit interview at the conclusion of the season that she was focusing on her family after undergoing a family emergency. Now, after having some time to think about her future, she is expected to head back to her roots in Indiana. White is an Indiana native and a former Indiana Fever player herself.ย

She notably wore number 22 on her jersey and spent four seasons with the Fever as a player. She returned to the Fever as their assistant coach for four years (2011-2014) and helped lead them to their first WNBA championship in 2012.

White then became the head coach of the Fever and coached for two seasons (2015 and 2016) accumulating an overall record of 37-31 and a playoff record of 6-6. This includes the Fever’s 2015 Finals appearance and 2016 postseason qualification.ย And after her time with Indiana, she served as the head coach of the Vanderbilt womenโ€™s basketball team for five seasons.

Through White’s varied career, she’s gained an immense amount of basketball knowledge at every level and corner of basketball: playing, coaching, and analyzing.ย Her knowledge has made her a highly sought-after candidate for a head coach around the league. The Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever expressed almost immediate interest in her following the Sunโ€™s semifinals Game 5 loss to the Minnesota Lynx.

It is only a matter of time until it is expected that the Fever announce her as their new head coach. White almost foreshadowed her departure during her exit interview, when she took the time to recognize that everyone that, at the end of the day, this is a business.

โ€œEvery year a team is going to be different,โ€ White said during her exit interview. โ€œEvery year opportunities arise through free agency and some other things that happen. We’re thankful for the time that we’ve had, and we’ll take the next steps whenever they present themselves.โ€

When she first became head coach of the Sun, she noted that there was already an existing culture of the team, a culture that may all change next season with White leaving and the franchises big three (Alyssa Thomas, Brionna Jones and DeWanna Bonner) entering free agency.

โ€œI think the team culture is pretty much already established, the identity of this franchise has been the same,โ€ White said at her inaugural press conference in 2022. โ€œItโ€™s been about hard work. Itโ€™s been about toughness, itโ€™s been about sacrifice, itโ€™s been about the team, itโ€™s been about [being] together. You know, for me, the culture that we want to continue to build on are those core principles.โ€

The Sun will have a chance to truly start over next season, should they choose to disband their roster. They Sun will now look to the future and hope to build another championship-contending team.
