Greetings from the road: Austin and St. Louis with the USWNT

The IX: Soccer Monday with Annie M. Peterson, Apr. 10, 2023

ST. LOUIS — Hey, it’s Sunday and I’m headed today to St. Louis for Game 2 of the USWNT this week against Ireland, but we just received the worst possible news about forward Mallory Swanson. Torn patella tendon in her left knee.

Doesn’t look good for the World Cup. Recovery from this injury can take 6-12 months. Alyssa Thompson was called up to replace her.

Here’s my game story from Saturday. There was so, so much. Swanson’s injury, Julie Ertz’s return, Emily Fox’s first international goal and Sinead Farrelly’s return.

Meg Linehan’s story on Farrelly for The Athletic is here.

I also wrote about Farrelly, but obviously defer to Linehan here because she originally broke the story.

Julie Ertz was honored for her 100th appearance with the national team, which she hit back in March 2020. The baby was there. Y’all know how I feel about babies.

Here’s Alex Morgan:

Here’s Julie Ertz!

And here’s Vlatko Andonovski’s post-match press conference.

Meg Linehan’s story on Vera Pauw for The Athletic. Watch the video below.

Just Women’s Sports on Sinead Farrelly.

Interesting story from ESPN on the Reign’s defense

Tamera Griffin for the Equalizer on the NWSL’s Brazilian players.

USA Today on Mallory Swanson and the growth of the NWSL.

This is kind of cool. Racing Louisville has players from six continents.

Really nice story on Jun Endo from Gwendolyn Oxenham for ESPN.

The Oregonian’s Ryan Clarke on Sophia Smith’s hat trick and NWSL Player of the Week honors.

Here’s video of her entire press conference. She is clearly angry. Credit to Ireland for not limiting questions to soccer.
