In Tuesday’s episode of Locked On Women’s Basketball, Howard Megdal sat down with Tiffany Mitchell to discuss the Minnesota Lynx guard getting her number retired at her alma mater South Carolina, her time to come in Athletes Unlimited next year, her overseas career and the WNBA.
Mitchell joined Megdal from Rwanda, where she’s currently playing until the beginning of AU in late February. Mitchell had started the winter season playing in Turkey, but said she “needed time at home to rest, just to mentally regroup, physically regroup.” After her jersey retirement in Columbia, she went to Rwanda but will have a chance to play stateside for AU, which will last for four weeks in Dallas.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for players who don’t want to go overseas, want to stay in the states and still compete at a high level,” Mitchell said. “You have really good players that played in the AU, and in this season, the roster is pretty stacked as well. So I think it’s just a great opportunity to go out there, improve your game and compete going into the W season.”

In learning about AU, Mitchell said she believes the league benefits two-way players, a title she takes pride in getting on her reputation. Mitchell also said she just moved to Dallas herself, so “everything kind of made sense” to join for this season.
Mitchell and Megdal also discussed her first season in Minnesota, during which she had 7.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game but grew into a key part of the Lynx’s rotation by season’s end. For Mitchell, the turnaround from the Lynx’s 0-6 start was a highlight, saying, “I bet nobody had us in the playoffs when we started the season.”
She believes there is room for the Lynx to grow in 2024, too.
“There’s a different level of basketball that we didn’t reach,” Mitchell said. “But we also know that we can get there.”
