It’s time for another episode of the Locked on Women’s Basketball podcast. This episode features host Missy Heidrick, who is joined by The Next‘s SEC correspondent Gabriella Lewis, who has much to discuss ahead of the league’s media day coming this week. The two discuss South Carolina, where Dawn Staley is teaming up again with Aliyah Boston and Zia Cooke to try and defend their SEC regular season and national title.
Gabriella talks about the SEC and what everyone else is saying about South Carolina:
“It’s definitely South Carolina’s year. I mean, it was last year, obviously. And I think they’re pretty unanimously the team to beat, especially with some of the injuries we’ve seen out of UConn and some other shifts. So I think the SEC is all about every team, but I think people are obviously focusing on South Carolina. And I think it’s a really interesting year in the SEC. You’ve also got a lot of influx, right, but teams like LSU are on the rise.”
Gabriella talks about South Carolina guards and who will replace Destanni Henderson:
“Yeah, I think they’ve got some new talent and they also don’t have a ton of folks coming in from the transfer portal, but they do have a few, especially in that veteran guard position. They’re going to need Kierra Fletcher was previously at Georgia Tech. And she’s also kind of this important veteran point guard presence and she played two years at Georgia Tech and two years elsewhere, so yeah I think that’s kind of where there may be some loose footing with Destanni Henderson just being a real powerhouse. But I think they continue to have other options.”
