Alex Simon of Bay Area News Group is back for another episode of Locked on Womenโs Basketball with Howard Megdal. The two discussed the new league, Unrivaled, that Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart announced on Thursday. Unrivaled is set to begin in 2024 and play from January through March, during the WNBA offseason.
How will this work with Athletes Unlimited? What about the overseas circuits? Alex and Howard talk about what we know and what questions remain about the 30-player Miami-based league.
“There’s clearly a market for 3-on-3, not just internationally where we’ve seen 3×3 thrive as an Olympic-level sport and as an alternative form of basketball for people to enjoy,” Alex said. “But even domestically, BIG3 has been able to have this kind of rotating tour every summer and at least create an avenue where people come out to watch.”
The two also compare the situation to baseball’s short-lived Continental League and even the current situation in men’s golf between the PGA and LIV tours. It’s not easy to compete with an existing league and it takes a lot of planning as well as clear, consistent funding.
“I think it’s an idea that makes a lot of sense,” Howard said. “And a lot of the right people are there to lead it. Now the question is, who do they attract to finish the job, and they’ve got six months to do it. So we shall see what comes next. And I can’t wait to be talking about it, even more.”
