The New York Liberty have finalized a deal to hire seasoned Golden State Warriors assistant Chris DeMarco as their new head coach, according to ESPN. He will be leading a team previously led by Sandy Brondello, the winningest coach in the franchise’s history. The Liberty decided not to renew her contract following the 2025 season after four seasons.
DeMarco has been on the Warriors coaching staff since 2012, serving as an assistant coach and a development coach. He’s also spent the past two seasons serving as a specialist on the team’s defense and was with the squad when they clinched NBA titles in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022. During his time in Golden State, he also led the Warriors’ Summer League team in the NBA offseason.
In addition, DeMarco has served as the head coach of the Bahamian senior men’s national team since 2019. He led the team to one of the biggest wins in program history, defeating Argentina in 2023. This allowed them to compete in the 2024 FIBA Olympic Qualifiers.
ESPN shared the news of the hire on X with the caption, “Breaking: The New York Liberty have agreed on a deal to hire Golden State Warriors assistant Chris DeMarco as their new head coach, sources tell @ShamsCharania.”
The Liberty won its first WNBA championship in franchise history in 2024 under Brondello, who is now the first head coach of the Toronto Tempo. Despite many core players like Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Sabrina Ionescu returning for the 2025 season, the team fell short of expectations and lost in the first round of the playoffs against the Phoenix Mercury.
