Welcome to The IX Sports Podcast! Officially launched Dec. 2, The IX Sports Podcast will include three women’s sports-specific shows with soccer every Tuesday, hockey every other Thursday and basketball every Friday. This episode focused on soccer, discussing the USWNT, the NWSL Championship and upcoming NCAA Division I College Cup.
Howard Megdal opened the podcast with an introduction to the new podcast structure, also inviting listeners to subscribe to Women’s Sports Daily, a daily, five-minute round-up of the biggest headlines in women’s sports.
He also introduced Kathleen Gier, host of The IX Sports Podcast soccer edition. She shared her thoughts on Catarina Macario, who scored five goals in her last three games with the women’s national team. Gier also shared a clips of Macario and coach Emma Hayes from their press availability that followed the final match of the year.
“Macario, I feel like is a especially exciting given her return from an ACL injury that kept her out two years and kept her out of that last Olympic cycle,” Gier said. “And I feel like when she got injured, she was really kind of the player to watch. She was at the top of her game, but she was really becoming a reliable piece for the US. She gets their contract overseas, starts playing in Europe, gets injured, and it feels like she’s kind of right back in form, and maybe even better than before.”
In later segments, Gier recapped the NWSL Championship, which NJ/NY Gotham FC won in San Jose and the NCAA Division I College Cup which is scheduled to begin on Friday.
