The WNBA released the results from the first round of All-Star fan voting on Friday, and former WNBA MVPs A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart led the pack.
Wilson, the Las Vegas Aces’ 2020 WNBA MVP and three-time WNBA All-Star, led all players with 21,668 votes after the first round of returns. Wilson served as captain of an All-Star team in 2019 and is on track to do so again.
Stewart, the Seattle Storm’s 2018 WNBA MVP and three-time WNBA All-Star, came in second in early voting with 20,866 votes. The host Chicago Sky’s Candace Parker received the third-most votes. The Aces’ Kelsey Plum and the Washington Mystics’ Elena Delle Donne received the fourth- and fifth-most, respectively.
Three Storm and three Aces players were among the top 10 vote-getters. One player each from the Sky, Mystics, Los Angeles Sparks and Minnesota Lynx rounded out the top 10.
Looking at the top 30 vote-getters, the Phoenix Mercury had five players, tied for the most with the Aces. The Storm had four players in the top 30, followed by the Sky, Mystics and Connecticut Sun with three apiece. The Sparks had two representatives, and the Lynx, Dallas Wings, New York Liberty, Atlanta Dream and Indiana Fever had just one player make the top 30.
Fans account for 50% of the total voting score, with the players and media accounting for 25% each. The four guards and six frontcourt players with the best weighted score from these three groups will be chosen as starters. The league’s head coaches will select the 12 reserve players.
Fan voting closes on June 20, and All-Star starters and captains will be announced on June 22. The captains will then draft teams on July 2. The All-Star Game will take place on July 10 at Wintrust Arena in Chicago at noon local time/1 p.m. ET.
