Continuing their announcements this week, the PWHL announced the hiring of Manon Rhéaume on Friday. The former professional player will serve as general manager for the league’s new franchise in Detroit. Rhéaume takes control of PWHL Detroit as they prepare for their inaugural season in 2026-27.

Originally from Quebec, Rhéaume had an illustrious goaltending career. This includes an Olympic Silver medal in 1998, as well as two World Championships titles. Additionally, in 1992, she made history as the first woman to ever play in the NHL. She then spent the majority of the following decade playing in the men’s professional ranks.

“I’m incredibly honored and excited to join the PWHL and help build something special in Detroit,” Rhéaume said. “This city has such a deep hockey tradition, and the passion for hockey here is truly special… I can’t wait to get started and build a team that Detroit fans will be proud of.”

Rhéaume has heavily contributed to the growth and development of hockey. For over 11 years, she has had a key role with the Little Caesars AAA Hockey Club in Detroit, helping grow the game for young athletes in the region. Over the last four seasons, she has been a member of the LA Kings operations staff.

“[Rhéaume] brings an unmatched hockey resume, a championship mindset, and a lifelong commitment to growing the women’s game,” said PWHL Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations, Jayna Hefford. “Her experience at every level of hockey, combined with her leadership and vision, makes her the perfect person to lead PWHL Detroit into its inaugural season.”

The league announced their expansion to Detroit on May 9th, and revealed the addition of teams in Hamilton, Ontario and Las Vegas earlier this week. Rhéaume will see her first duties as general manager begin over the next month with the expansion process. The PWHL will host its entry draft in Detroit on June 17th.
