Less than 12 hours after posting a thought-provoking tweet about the current state of professional womenโ€™s hockey, veteran defender Shannon Doyle re-signed with the Connecticut Whale.

Doyle is the first player to sign with an NWHL club this offseason who has chosen not to disclose her salary. Sheโ€™s also the first player to sign with the Whale and the fourth player to sign a contract since free agency began on May 15.

The Boston University alumna had a career year for the Whale last season which included a trip to the 2019 NWHL All-Star Game in Nashville. She scored three goals and picked up five assists to finish third on the team in scoring. Prior to the 2018-19 season, Doyle had two goals in her first 48 regular season games in the NWHL.

โ€œWe are very excited to have Shannon Doyle back for a fifth season with the Connecticut Whale,โ€ Connecticut general manager Bray Ketchum shared in the leagueโ€™s press release. โ€œShe is a leader on this team and one of our top defenders. Her passion for the game is always evident and I know she is going to continue to be a role model on and off the ice.โ€
