The Para Ice Hockey 2023 Women’s World Challenge has just wrapped up, so its a perfect time to look back at the action through data visualizations, including a new game-level data viz style from me and the old sunburst classic. If the viz gets you curious or confused, an explanation of all of my data viz styles is available in my viz reference. In addition, all games were streamed on the Paralympics Games Youtube channel, so you can go back and watch the action yourself too!
The Games
The tournament featured eight games, consisting of a full six game round-robin of the four competing teams (Team USA, Team Canada, Team World, and Team Great Britain) followed by two playoff games between the two top and the two bottom teams after the round-robin.

The Teams

Team USA
Team USA closed out the Women’s Worlds Challenge with a perfect record, never allowing a goal against while scoring 19 goals for, six more goals than the next team. They were headlined by Lera Doederlein and Catherine Faherty, who at 8 and 7 points respectively had the most and tied for the second-most points of the tournament.

Team Canada
Team Canada took second place at the tournament. Their top point scorer was Raphaรซlle Tousignant, with 6 points. Special shoutout to Vanessa Racine, who scored three points – all coming from a hat trick against Team Great Britain.

Team World
Team World finished third in the tournament but had a solid goalscoring presence, ending up scoring 1 more goal overall than second-place Team Canada. Lending credit to the adage “the best offense is a good defense,” both of Team World’s highest point scorers were defenders: Lena Schroeder, who tied for second-most points of the tournament with 7 points, and Ailin Zheng with 5 points, including a hat trick in their playoff game against Team Great Britain.

Team Great Britain
Team Great Britain only scored one goal at the tournament, but they made it a special one: it was the first goal scored of the tournament, in the first period of the opening game against Team World.
