Welcome back to The IX Sports Podcast — which today, is all about women’s soccer. Host Kathleen Gier highlights the Boston Legacy’s first-ever win, in which they defeated fellow expansion club Denver Summit FC, 3–2.

“Even though this was Boston’s first win, they’ve definitely made some steady progress so far this season,” Gier said, citing a draw with North Carolina Courage FC last week.

Despite progress by the Legacy this season, they remain at the bottom of the NWSL with a 1–5 record. Gier breaks down the state of the league following just over a month of regular-season play. Portland Thorns FC is on top — but the middle of the pack is crowded.

Also on today’s episode, Gier breaks down the UEFA Women’s Champions League standings, where Barcelona remains dominant despite being tied with Lyon.

“Barcelona is just on an absolute tear in the UWCL this season,” Gier said, noting that the club has won eight matches, but with a 19 goal differential. This year will be their sixth consecutive trip to the finals.

Lyon will face Barcelona in the UWCL final on May 23, marking their 12th overall appearance in the final match. The path to the final was harder for Lyon than it was for Barcelona, Gier said.

“Lyon has a tougher campaign, I mean, in comparison to Barcelona, which isn’t exactly a fair comparison — but they dropped matches to Wolfsburg and Arsenal in the playoffs,” she said.

Gier also covers other women’s soccer news — from highlights this week in the Northern Super League to the most chronically online moment of the week (hint: it’s cute). Don’t miss another episode of The IX Sports Podcast, and be sure to subscribe below!
